Edinburgh Caley merge with Currie FC Girls

Edinburgh Caledonia Ladies and Currie FC Girls are the new kids on the block in women’s football in Edinburgh, in their newly established player pathway from girls to the senior women’s team.

Edinburgh Caledonia Ladies FC was founded in 2012 by Sammy Hyett as she sought to create opportunities for local women to play football in the Edinburgh area at a time when she thought she wouldn’t play again after a serious knee injury. Hyett came back to play marking her 30th year in women’s football last year.

Caley Ladies currently play in the SWF Championship South alongside other local teams Edinburgh City, Livingston and Hutchison Vale. They have already made it to a semi-final, overcoming Edinburgh City in the Championship League Cup Quarter Finals.

Caley have ambitions to be playing in SWPL2 within the next three to four years and also hope to create youth national performance squads in the years to come. While their league ambitions are high, the club’s priority is to make sure that all teams are enjoying their football.

A complete player pathway

Gerry Butler, Chair at Currie FC, became concerned about the lack of opportunities for girls to progress into senior football. The club has its roots in the community from the late 1950s at Currie Community Centre (nee Currie Youth Club) and is still based there. Girls have taken part in football for many years but without any organised progression into high school years or beyond. A player pathway for boys exists between Currie FC and Heriot Watt University FC. Gerry is delighted that the club can now complement this with a girls pathway, especially at a time when girl’s and ladies’ football is on the ascendancy.

Head of Girls at Currie FC, Dave McIntosh, wants to be able to offer girls of all ages the opportunity to play football in the South East WEST through a pathway from grassroots to first team football.

Currie FC Girls will not only have the support of Head of Girls Section Dave McIntosh but also newly appointed support in Edinburgh Caley players Kim Dallas and Jennifer Stewart managing the relationship to consolidate the gap between under 13s and the ladies team aiming for a better experience for all players, families and coaches under the Caley and Currie banners.
